Weekend of February 29th - March 2nd, 2008.

Hello dear students!

THIS WEEKEND IS DEDICATED TO FINISHING UP YOUR RESEARCH PAPER.

1. Remember to send us your drafts. Don't wait to finish your entire paper before sending to us whatever you have done throughout the next couple of days. We especially need to see anything that is still a first draft so that you have time to correct.

2. When you have finished correcting, you can send to us what you have corrected
and eventually the entire paper.

We(Adrianne or Lili) will edit and send to you the corrections electronically(or in person as quickly as possible. Don't wait for our corrections. Just keep on sending
you finish little by little.

If you live in the downtown area, please let us know(e-mail). We will give you a time to meet us on Sunday to talk over your corrections. But even if you do come on Sunday, remember to send your drafts to us today and perhaps tomorrow morning, so that we can do the corrections before we see you.

3. Don't forget to consult your Book: Honest Work in College, Chapter 7 in particular or the Concordia Library Information(At the end of the Unit on Male/Female)

4. Make sure that you send us your Reference List so that we can correct, help etc.if necessary.

5. In the RESEARCH PROJECT unit, (Part 1 of your materials), take a look at the
check list of what you need to do before handing in the paper. If you have any questions ask.

That's it for now...Take a look at the blog again tomorrow...may have more instructions.

Have a good working weekend. Don't stress out too much...although a little stress might actually push you to finish!!

Long Weekend of February 21st-24th,2008

Hello again,

We really enjoyed the lunch which gave us the opportunity to chat with you on another level than in the classroom!!

You have all been working hard and you need to continue to do so....in this last English course before you go out into the big world....university, work, travelling, etc.!!!

SOME REMINDERS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR THE PAPER

1. Write something everyday and send to us whatever you have written even if it is only one page. In other words, don't wait till you have finished the section to send us your work.

2. Send only the work you haven't already given to us. For example,if you gave us(or sent us) the first two pages of a section, don't give or send them again along with the next few pages.

3. Don't forget to attribute(in text references: eg.(Meyrs, 2004)at the end of a paraphrase or Meyrs (2004) points out....... or when quoting a sentence or a passage, "...................." (Meyers, 2004, pg 15).

Even if you are not sure of the exact form, you need to put in the references as you are writing. It is much easier than to try to find them afterwards. Remember, you put the last name of the author and the date that the book or article was published. You don't need any other details in the text. (the details go in the reference list). If you don't have the name of the author, put in the title of the article/book/video and the date.

At the end of the unit on Male/Female communication, you have information from Concordia Library on how to attribute or cite the authors you have used. Also
Chapter 7 in the book Doing Honest Work in College...gives you more details. Consult that chapter if you need to.

BLOGGING

Which of the following units did you prefer? Explain both in terms of interest in the content and in terms of skills and language you learned.

Superskyscrapers
Language Learning
Evolution
Male/Female
Happiness
Animal Experimentation
Population Mid Term
Plagiarism

Don't forget to respond to each others blogs.

Hope you manage to have a little bit of fun...but remember to give a real push on the paper.

Weedend February 16-17th, 2008.

Hi there,

Well we have officially finished half the course. Adrianne and I are really sataisfied with the work you have produced so far. Don't slow down now! You need to apply everything you learned in the first 5 weeks to the work we will be doing from now to the end of the course.

1. THE MAIN ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS WEEKEND IS TO WORK ON YOUR RESEARCH.

YOU SHOULD BE READING YOUR BOOKS AND ARTICLES AND MAKING NOTES(MAPS).

Read Chapter 3 of the book (How to do Honest Work....). This chapter gives you tips on how to take notes etc.

2. BLOGGING

Blogging helps make you more fluent in the language. It allows you to express your opinions on a variety of subjects. It also connects you to your classmates in a way that isn't always possible in the classroom. You learn more about each other. If this isn't enough, remember that the blogging project does count for 5% of the final mark. It is an easy 5% to get...so.......

half the marks will be given at the end of next week.

BLOGGING ASSIGNMENT FOR THIS WEEKEND:

Answer the 3 discussion questions on Population

Remember to react to your classmate's blogs.

3. POPULATION QUIZ
Be prepared to explain your answers on Monday morning.

We will be beginning at 9:00 on Monday morning We will be doing the midterms with the other A2 class. Please be on time.

Important note that I forgot in the last posting

TRY TO GET YOUR SUMMARIES IN TO ADRIANNE'S E-MAIL BY TOMORROW NOON!

Weekend of February8-10th, 2008

Hello everyone:

I guess it is time for me to post the assignments that you are aware of but just in case here they are:

1. HAPPINESS : First draft of summary based on the two articles
that you have read, discussed and mapped to be sent to Adrianne:
adriannesklar@yahoo.com

- Try to write directly from your notes in order to avoid copying from the text.
- Try to include citations (in-text references):
.......(Smith, 2007)at the end of an idea attributed to a specific author or
Smith(2007)points out that........at the beginning of an idea.
- After you have finished writing save it.
- Edit your work a few hours later(you will be able to identify your mistakes better if you put your work away for a while) for grammatical, spelling mistakes etc. Look for the mistakes you tend to usually make. Anything you correct at this time is better than if you correct nothing.

2. ANIMAL UNIT

a) Discussion question: Read over the discussion question and answer in note
form. We will discuss these questions on Monday.
b) First Article by Jeremy Rivkin. Read and highlight for
discussion on Monday.

3. BLOGS

Comment on the following questions about your Novel Project:
How would you rate the various parts of the project on a scale of 1-10 ,first in
terms of interest: 1 being very interesting etc. and second in terms of how much
you learned)
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Reading

Class discussions with your group

Written Review

Oral Presentations(your own)

(as part of the audience)
____________________________________________________________________________________
Of course after rating these sections you need to explain your answers AND comment on your classmate's answers.

4. BOOK: Doing Honest Work in College (FOR TUESDAY)
Read and highlight the first 2 chapters.
Am starting to feel sorry for you so have postponed till Tuesday.

5. RESEARCH PROJECT

Don't forget to look for books in Clues and perhaps to go to the library to take out or photocopy on Sunday? It is a good place to do some of your work there too, not only the research..

For NEXT WEEK:
Research Unit and Animal Unit and Plagiarism from Part 2 of your Binder. For those of you doing lectures.....you know what to do.

Remember, we are going to have a guest lecturer on Monday Morning to talk about Animal Rights.

See you all on Monday at 9:00. Will close the door at 9:10 but will begin class at 9:00.
